Electrical System Design Principles
A building electrical system starts with a load calculation โ determining the total power demand so that the supply cable, main distribution board (MDB), and sub-distribution boards (SDB) are correctly sized. Undersized wiring overheats and causes fires. Oversized wiring wastes money. The design must comply with the applicable wiring regulations for the country.
Load Calculation
Load calculation follows a demand factor approach โ not every socket and light is on simultaneously, so a diversity factor (typically 0.5โ0.7 for residential) is applied to the connected load. For a typical 3-bedroom house in Pakistan: lighting 2kW + fans 1.5kW + general power 4kW + air conditioning 6kW + kitchen 3kW = 16.5kW connected load ร 0.65 diversity = 10.7kW design load. This determines the size of the main incoming cable (typically 25โ35mmยฒ for this load) and the main circuit breaker (50A).
Distribution Board Design
The distribution board (DB / consumer unit) is the heart of the electrical installation. It contains the main isolator, residual current devices (RCDs/ELCBs) for shock protection, and miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) for each circuit. Under IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) and NFPA 70 (NEC), circuits must be segregated by use: lighting circuits separately from power (socket) circuits, and dedicated circuits for heavy loads (AC, water heater, oven).
Wiring Systems
Concealed conduit wiring is the standard for all quality construction in South Asia and the Gulf. PVC conduit pipes are embedded in walls and slabs during construction; cables are pulled through after plastering. Provides protection, replaceability, and a clean finish. Surface wiring (trunking or open cables) is used in industrial and commercial settings for accessibility. Armoured cable (SWA) is used for underground runs and exposed external installations.
Earthing and Bonding
Earthing is the single most important safety feature of an electrical installation โ it provides a low-resistance path for fault current so that circuit breakers trip instead of users receiving electric shock. Under PESCO/LESCO regulations in Pakistan and equivalents worldwide, earth electrode resistance must be below 1 ohm. In high-resistivity soils (rocky ground, dry sandy areas) achieving this requires multiple electrodes or chemical earthing compounds.
